Emily arrived at the hospital on her own, with nobody to hold her hand through the whole ordeal. Her husband had done a vanishing act a few months earlier, right after she’d broken the happy news about the baby.
The labour went on for hours, but eventually the first proper cries of the newborn bounced off the delivery-room walls. Everything had gone remarkably well, and the little lad was perfectly healthy.
The doctor gently scooped the boy up to hand him to Emily, when something rather strange happened.
He froze mid-pass. His hands were trembling, just a touch. He looked at the baby’s face, then at Emily’s, and his eyes brimmed with tears.
“Doctor, is everything all right?” Emily asked, starting to worry.
He nodded, unable to get any words out for a moment.
Then, in a voice that cracked at the edges, he whispered something that left Emily rooted to the spot.
The rest of the story is in the first comment below.
The doctor had spotted the tiny birthmark on the baby’s arm.
He recognised it straight away as the exact same mark his own son had — the son he hadn’t seen in years, and with whom he’d lost all contact.
His heart gave a lurch.
Emily followed his gaze, a knot forming in her stomach, and asked what on earth was going on.
The doctor breathed in deep, eyes glistening, and explained that the birthmark was identical to his son’s. Which, as these things tend to mean, made the baby his grandson.
Emily felt the world wobble beneath her.
The loneliness of that long labour simply dissolved, replaced by a feeling so huge it left her breathless.
She hugged her son tight, while the doctor, rather moved, realised this tiny little person had just repaired a bond that had been broken for a very long time.
